Life of St. Anthony of Padua

Saint Anthony of Padua was born into a wealthy family in Portugal in 1185. At age 15, he entered the order of St. Augustine but eventually became a Franciscan priest in the Orders of Friar Minors and traveled to Morocco to preach. While in Morocco, he became sick and had to return to Portugal. During his trip home, he became shipwrecked in Sicily. He remained in Italy living a quiet life in a cave. He would only venture out for daily Mass and to sweep the local monastery. One day he was asked to speak at an ordination. He was such a gifted speaker that soon huge crowds gathered to hear him. His speeches were so powerful he inspired many to convert. Many were touched by his peacemaking efforts and he became known as the "Wonder Worker".

Legend has it that a novice monk stole Anthony's favorite prayer book. Anthony prayed that his book be found and an apparition appeared before the novice monk demanding he return the book. Today people ask for Anthony's intercession with God when searching for lost items.
